Leather Trench Coat History

Trench coats as we know them today have a heritage that extends far beyond fashion runways. The history of trench coats dates back to rainy Scotland in the 1820s when Scottish chemist and inventor Charles Macintosh and British inventor Thomas Hancock began creating rain repellent coats, also known as the “mack”. Made from rubberised cotton, the “mack” was intended as outerwear for the well-dressed man whose days involved riding, shooting, fishing, outdoor activities and military service.

In 1853, a tailor named John Emary developed and improved the raincoat under his company name Aquascutum. Then in 1856, Thomas Burberry, a draper from Hampshire followed suit when he launched the Burberry brand. By 1979, Burberry had perfected its “gabardine” fabric by weatherproofing the individual strands of cotton and wool fibre rather than the finished textile. It proved to be extremely popular with explorers, aviators and adventurers.

Both Aquascutum and Burberry take credit for having “invented” the WWI trench coat, but in fact, the two brands simply helped popularise a coat that already existed and adapted it for military use. The trench coat would often be worn by military officers signifying that this was a style not only for the upper class but for those who wanted to aid in the war efforts. More affordable alternatives of the Burberry and Aquascutum trench coat were later introduced allowing the masses to get behind the patriotic trend.

The trench coat was also worn by officers during WWII but by the 1940s it began to lose its ties with the military. Hollywood helped to glamourise the trench coat by replacing the image of officers with gangsters, detectives, journalists and spies. The trench coat was worn in some of the most iconic movies in cinematic history including Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca, Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Marlene Dietrich in A Foreign Affair. This helped the trench coat become a style staple amongst the fashionable.

Thanks to the trench coat's rich history, fashion designers have continued to draw inspiration from its timeless look. Not only is the trench coat still a signature piece of clothing within Burberry but other designers such as Martin Margiela, Rei Kawakubo and Jean-Paul Gaultier have also featured the trench coat in their runway collections.
